Stainless Steel 420 Sheet is a stainless steel that has high carbon content in its composition. The material has high toughness due to the high carbon content. The material is made up of carbon, iron, chromium, manganese, silicon, phosphorus and sulfur in its composition. The AMS 5506 Sheet contains chromium in 12% of the composition and this makes the steel corrosion resistant to most general corrosive applications. The material has high tensile and yield strengths at 204 degrees Celsius. The minimum tensile strength is 1600MPa and the minimum yield strength is 1360MPa. The strength of the AISI 420 Stainless Steel Sheet drops down with the increasing temperature. The material has only 895MPa minimum tensile strength and 680MPa minimum yield strength at 650 degrees Celsius. The SS 420 Sheet  is annealed and it is used with high hardness. The material can belong to different specifications for different applications. The specifications could be A240 pressure vessel specification or the A276.

The AISI 420 Sheet should not be attempted to temper in the range of 400 degrees to 600 degrees Celsius because the material tempts to brittle in this range. However, the annealing of the SS 420 Plate avoids it from being brittle. There are different production methods, polishing and finishing available for the Stainless Steel SUS 420 Hot Rolled Plates and the cold rolled sheets. The material has good thermal conductivity and electric conductivity as well. The material is air quenched or oil quenched after being heated up to 980 degrees Celsius for hardening heat treatment. The Stainless Steel 420 2B Finish Plates are used in outdoor applications that require polished surfaces. The material can also be used in high pressure applications with the requirements of the ASME SA240 Stainless Steel 420 Plates. Since they are strong and corrosion resistant, they are used in shear blades, cutlery, needle valves and in surgical equipment for the most part. Possible Alternative Grades to 420 Stainless Steel Plate

Grade Reasons for choosing grade 420
410 Only a lower hardened strength is needed.
416 High machinability is required, and the lower hardened strength and lower corrosion resistance of 416 is acceptable.
440C A higher hardened strength or hardness than can be obtained from 420 is needed.
"Specials" Variations of 420 are available to special order. These offer higher hardness, corrosion resistance and machinability for particular applications.
